WordPress.org censorship
When big companies play favorites.
Maybe you have heard already: WordPress.org is selectively censoring and removing plugins that have been part of the repository for years. Now … these are not just any old plugins, but high demand plugs like feed-monster for wordpress, or lane66.coms affiliate tools. These are plugins that are updated regularly and have a huge member-base.
These members have relied on wordpress.org for years to receive their update notices and upgrade plugins with a few mouse-clicks. WordPress.org is now removing these plugins under the umbrella of “….we no longer allow plugins with autoposting abilities…” . Unfortunately these acts appear random at best since other plugins that have not been updated since version 2.7 are still sitting dormant in the repository with autoposting options.
Many developers and users have been affected by these moves. Especially since wordpress.org and the “censory board” remove items without so much as a warning or notice. From one minute to the next everything just disappears without a trace.
WordPress developers are moving off-site …
It is a sad statement, but with these actions wordpress was throwing their userbase back into 2008 when users had to scour the internet in search of plugins scattered all over the place.
Luckily, in the case of the affiliate plugins like feed-monster, tradetracker widgets, lane66, shareasale etc. and others
there are places like http://tonli.eu
where you can now host your plugins outside of wordpress.org control and censorship.
Plugins hosted on this site will automatically update like any other plugin, and users will never see a difference.
For the plugin developer though, the difference is huge ! Freedom from censorship and companies playing favorites is a huge thing!
http://tonli.eu and its peers can be regarded as the freedom fighters of today.
Unfortunately it is a sad statement that we now have to protect ourselves against “free spirits” like wordpress.org .. not so org, not so free, not so nice !
